Our Story
Christian Youth Camps of South Australia (CYC) began running camps on hired properties throughout the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. By the early 1970s, finding suitable venues during school holidays had become increasingly difficult. A small group of young leaders began praying and dreaming about establishing a permanent campsite — even though CYC had no funds to make it possible.
Not long after, an advertisement appeared for land at Wellington available in 1973. This opened the door for the purchase of the land and the birth of what is now El Shaddai, a name from the Bible meaning “God Almighty”.
The early years were shaped by extraordinary generosity and sacrifice. A church in Modbury donated a house if CYC could dismantle and relocate it — so volunteers pulled it apart piece by piece and rebuilt it on the new site. Families lived in caravans while constructing facilities, clearing rocky ground (sometimes even with dynamite!), planting trees, and forming the foundations of the campsite. Local farmers also contributed countless hours and machinery to support the growing ministry.
From the first small camps in the mid-1970s until today, hundreds of volunteers and staff have invested in building bunkhouses, a dining room and kitchen, the Recreation Hall, and other facilities. What guests enjoy now is the result of more than 50 years of faithful work, prayer, and service from people who believed in the mission.
Who We Are Today
Christian Youth Camps of South Australia (CYCSA) is a ministry of the Christian Brethren Assemblies of South Australia, operating El Shaddai Campsite for schools, churches, community groups, and a wide range of camps and retreats.
We exist to serve children, young people, and adults by providing meaningful opportunities for growth, adventure, learning, and Christian fellowship.
We run numerous camps throughout the year including:
